Hydrogen aircraft: architecture choices extend far beyond the airframe

Hydrogen changes storage, propulsion, airport infrastructure, turnaround procedures, maintenance and certification assumptions at the same time.

A hydrogen aircraft is not simply a conventional aircraft with a different fuel. The energy carrier reshapes the full operating system.

The extended architecture

Cryogenic storage affects tank volume and aircraft configuration. Propulsion choice affects thermal management and electrical systems. Airport supply affects route viability and fleet deployment. Maintenance and emergency procedures must evolve with the hazard model.

Credible roadmaps therefore need aircraft, infrastructure and operations to mature as one programme.
